PC still dominates the Internet, that much is certain. Most people who access the Web do it through their computers or laptops. However, mobile is slowly but surely beginning to overtake PC in terms of internet usage. This is something Google noticed as a tendency a few years back, which is why they unleashed the Hummingbird, causing a mini-heart attack to some people in the field of SEO because they expected grand changes. While some of the queries were affected, websites that were already doing well kept their position. What Hummingbird changed was the way queries worked, enabling a fuller range of search results for long-tail keywords and semantic search. One of the reasons for the update was the fact that many users were utilizing the voice interface on their mobile devices and while that worked relatively well with the old algorithms, Hummingbird optimized it.
The fact that Google launch a major rework of their algorithms should raise an alarm in your mind because that might affect your business if your website is not optimized for mobile. There are two levels of effect. The first one is Google. They’ve sent warnings to webmasters whose websites are not optimized for mobile. This might mean a new update that might cause your existing rank to plummet. Google don’t care about your business; they care about theirs. And their business is to provide people with good content. By saying “people” we mean mobile users, as well. Hence if your site is not optimized for mobile, there is a high chance Google will decide to punish your for it, so in case a large portion of your website’s traffic comes from organic search, you might want to consider optimizing your business website for mobile.
Second level is the clients, themselves. More and more people are turning to mobile, which means that websites not optimized for it become a major pain in the neck. This tendency is growing, so right now is as good a time as any to change your ways. When your website is not optimized, it loads slower, but it’s also more difficult to navigate. People have to put more effort into browsing it, which most users today are never going to do, so you are losing (potential) clients.
What can you do? If you’re using a platform like WordPress, there might be a decent chance that you will be able to easily tweak some settings around in the Content Management System and optimize it. However, if that’s not an option, then you’ll have to contact the developer of your business website (or any other web developer) who will be able to optimize it for you. However, this will cost you. At the end of the day you should decide which costs more – potentially losing clients and rank, or paying someone to fix the problem for you. The decision is up to you.
