How to Hire the Right People for the Job

Job hunting is frustrating. We’ve all been there. You send your CV to tens of companies, then you go on interviews where you have to present yourself in the best light possible. Then you have to wait and see whether the interviewer liked you and if you get a job offer several different places, you have to carefully decide which one you want to take and be careful not to make a mistake. Of course, if it’s a big company and there is a human resources department, this complicates things further and you simply can’t catch a break. It can take more than a month before you can know what in the world is going on and whether you will be hired or not. It can be a rather exhausting experience.

However, what we often don’t think about is how employers hire us. Most small businesses don’t have a human resources department, so owners or managers have to hire people, themselves. They have to carefully vet all candidates and make sure that they hire the right people for the job. This is not an easy task, especially if you don’t have formal training, so some mistakes are quite possible, but there are a few things you can do in order to avoid them.

First thing you have to do before making a choice is actually gathering candidates. They can’t telepathically know that you need to hire people, so you need to let them know. Flyers are a good way to start. You can put up flyers in your own establishment (if it deals with people), at college campuses (if you’re looking for eager students to work for you), or even on the street.

This is the old school method, anyway. Nowadays you can use the Internet and platforms like LinkedIn to get the message across. They will also help you with the next step – vetting. You can look at a lot of profiles and choose the right candidates. Look for more professionally looking profiles – if a person hasn’t taken the time to create a proper profile, they’re probably not diligent enough in their work, either.

When people start to apply, you will have to deal with lots of CVs and resumes. Pay close attention to what people are saying in there. Guidelines for what a good resume is exist on the Internet, so if a person doesn’t have one, they’re probably not going to be good employees if they haven’t taken the effort to find this out. Make sure that you look for errors and possible deception. Finally, you want to look for CVs or resumes that are a bit more original than the rest of you’re looking for people who are going to do creative work.

These are some of the basics. Finally, on the interview, use your own judgment for whether the person will be good in your company or not. This should be easy once you’re armed with all the information. If it’s possible to give them a test, do it. Best of luck.
